“Do it for the love of painting and not for the likes or followers because that’s when you’ll really be yourself.” – Katie Cole
This self-taught makeup artist transforms herself into horror-themed characters and makes them beautiful!
Meet Katie Cole:
Katie Cole is a talented artist from Los Angeles and the creative brains behind her brand Fancy Flutie! Cole’s makeup designs have a distinct flavor of horror that’s intertwined with colors that pop off the screen and makes you want to take a second look!
With her makeup designs now catching the publics’ attention with over 100,000 Instagram followers, I decided to catch up with the talented artist to see how she did it.
Interview with Katie Cole from Fancy Flutie:
Katie, how long have you been practicing the art of makeup?
Katie: I have been experimenting with makeup and paints on myself for about four years now. I started as a face painter (and still am) for children’s parties.
What inspires your makeup the most?
Katie: I’m really inspired by darker things like skeletons and hearts and anatomy, but I enjoy making them beautiful. I also love doing things with rainbow colors. I like being dark and colorful at the same time.
What has been your biggest challenge in this industry?
Katie: I think the biggest challenge is being unique in a space where there are thousands of people trying to do the same thing as you and just finding your own style.
What’s your favorite creation/makeup design so far?
Katie: It’s really hard for me to choose because I love them each for different reasons, but I think the black and white clown with a rainbow face mask is my new favorite because it came from the heart.
Do you have a career highlight so far?
Katie: I got to do a demo at SCARE LA and gave also been invited to BH cosmetics and NYX headquarters which was super fun.
What advice could you give to someone who’s thinking about doing something similar to you?
Katie: I say just do it for the love of painting and not for the likes or followers because that’s when you’ll really be yourself, and that’s what people want to see, someone genuine. Also, PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. I paint almost every day, and I’ve seen so much improvement each month!
